Fitness and Diet Goals for January 2015 | Getting Back into the Swing of Things

Every year since I had Z, Jillian and I reconnect in January. She kicks my behind, I sweat and cry tears of pain, the fat slowly melts away, I become stronger, Jillian becomes easier, I get bored, and then we fall out by the summer. This cycle sucks because I am not progressing any further than what I have already achieved previously. By time summer rolls around, I get so side tracked due to vacation and travel that I literally forget about exercising. It is ridiculous but I really do.

But (and thank goodness there's a but) here I am trying this madness all over again. Something inside of me is hoping for a better outcome but I have to approach fitness with a different mindset. I need to stop playing the role of the hare, rushing to achieve my fitness goals in an unrealistic amount of time, just to lose focus and forfeit my hard efforts by the second half of the year. And this is not just physical but in anything I do. I go hard, I am dedicated, I am consistent. I see changes. I progress. Until I burn out. Lose balance. Fall out. Push away. Revert back to old ways. Hello again, comfort box.

This year, I am transforming to the tortoise. Yes, I am going to go slow, but I am going to sustain. Yes, from past experience, I know I am capable of working out 60 minutes a day, 5 days a week for the first half of the year, but this year, my work out aim for the next 6 months is just 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week, period. Whether it is high intensity, low intensity, or simply a slow stroll, as long as I am active for 30 minutes straight, it counts. I got my first workout in on Monday and then again on yesterday. I am straight up sore but I am aiming for my third workout on tomorrow (although walking/standing for 3 hours as a chaperone on my daughter's field trip today should count as a workout!)

I was considering going back to MyFitnessPal but the thought of it drains me right now. Yes, counting calories has worked in the past, but I honestly am not at the point now where I want to measure everything. It can be time consuming and draining. Plus, I have been slowly recovering from a long standing perfectionist mentality...counting each calorie at every single meal will not help in this endeavor. Instead, my focus will be on eating more whole foods, less processed foods and sweets, and drinking more water. I am keeping it pretty general this month so I can get back into the swing of things.

For this month, my goals are:
  • Do Jillian Michael's DVD three times a week.
  • Drink 6 cups of water (I am not much of a water drinker in the winter so this is a good start for me)
  • Replace a snack/sweet with a fruit or veggie or even a smoothie (banana cucumber is so refreshing!)
And that's it for this month. I plan to do a check in at the end of the month to assess how things went.
